Athleticism and Empathy in Upper Elementary

Physical Education at MBTS offers many rich opportunities to not only strengthen the body but to also nurture the spirit, through leadership, camaraderie and care for others.

January brought Upper Elementary students a wonderful opportunity to sharpen their football skills, as we welcomed special guest Coach Peter to the school for several forty-minute instruction sessions. Coach Peter, who hails from the Netherlands, coaches Total Soccer and brings a wealth of experience from playing with one of Belgium’s top youth clubs, KAA Gent. He livened up the children’s game with fun and fast-paced games, and some very nifty tricks.

Some unexpected changes in the Specialty schedule this month brought about some amazing opportunities for the Grade Five students to exercise leadership and compassion for their younger friends. They were very excited to take on the role of mentors and helpers during a few Toddler PE sessions, and they fulfilled this responsibility with flying colours! They did an amazing job setting up safe and stimulating obstacle courses for our young Toddler friends, animatedly sang and led circle time, and demonstrated genuine joy and delight as they helped the little ones carefully play with balls and hoops, and navigate balance beams.

This experience was such a success with both the Toddlers and the Upper Elementary students that, with the support of their classroom teachers, we are now creating a schedule that will enable the Upper Elementary children to volunteer their time to help out with the Toddler PE class on a regular basis.

This was a heartwarming way to bring the truest goals of physical education and sport to the forefront: to celebrate the awesome capabilities of the body and the infinite capacity of the heart.

Primary Football League

Its that time of the year again….

South Sound United is our school football team which is comprised of players from both MBTS, First Baptist Christian School (FBCS) and sometimes Hope Academy. We play in the CUC Primary Football League (PFL). The season runs from Sept – January and games begin in October.

In the 4 years since we have joined the league our teams have done remarkable.

In the past we have had training once a week with games every Saturday. U9 usually play at 9-10am and U11 at 10-11.15am. These games are played at different locations around the island. Training is usually held at the First Baptist field but it often floods during rainy season so we are constantly on the look out for somewhere new to train.

During September we are planning one weekday session and one session on Saturdays. Days and times to be confirmed next week.

To be eligible for training your child must be in at least Grade Two this school year. To play in the Under 9s, players need to be 8 and under by March 1, 2013. To be eligible for Under 11s, players need to be 10 and under by July 1, 2013.

Both new players and past players wishing to try out for South Sound United U9 or U11 Team are welcome.

Because this is a competitive school league a certain skill level is needed by the children for their own safety. During September everyone is welcome to train and at the end of the month a squad is picked for the U11 and U9 teams.

Our “try outs” are done on an observation basis. The coaches pick children at an appropriate skill level for the PFL and who also showed a great desire for the game, positive attitude and good sportsmanship. The children that do not make the squad are invited to continue training in a B squad with the hopes they will be ready to move up to the squad in the coming months or be ready for the following season. This all depends on the amount of parent volunteers we have to coach.

Our school taking part in the league, would not be possible without the commitment and effort that is put in by our parent/ staff coaches.

This year I am in search of coaches for the U9 group I do have one FB parents who can only help out only on Saturdays. The U11s will be coached once again by Mr Chad and is being assisted this year by Chris Hew.

If your child is interested in taking part please email me directly with your childs name, DOB and what team they would like to try out for.

If you are willing to either head coach the U9s or assist as a coach please let me know as soon as possible.

We need you
