The Grade 1’s and 2’s have been working on their Word documents, and getting more familiar with the different things we can do in that program.  Please see some of the photos below the students have manipulated!

As we wrap up our African studies, the students are busily editing their projects and you will see our ‘Africa wall’ slowly coming together.  This means we are getting closer to the feast!  The students have been invited to present their projects to the class and we hope to have the grand finale, our ‘African Food Fest’, by February 17th.  We will confirm the date soon!

February 2012

Upper Elementary has begun their Art studies on ‘abstract’, ‘realism’, and ‘impressionism’. We are working on real canvas to create ‘triptych’ portraits.

The Middle Years students have been studying Asia, and while we ring in the New Year, we are making Chinese Lanterns (with authentic rice paper!) Please see the photos below.

I even taught a lesson to Ms Kourtni, Ms Debbie, and Ms Andrea, and I must say they look like they had a blast! Please check out the photos below.

The Casa students have been learning some new singing games, and are getting more familiar with so-mi-la and will soon be adding ‘do’. They have also been finding their singing voice in a different way – with Kazoos!

The Kindergartners have been drawing notes and notating the songs we’ve learned.

In Lower Elementary we have begun using some fantastic items I acquired from the ‘Florida Music Educator’s Conference’ in Tampa – we’re using ribbons, boomwackers, and there’s still a few other surprises in store!

Upper Elementary have also used some of the materials from the FMEA conference – we’ve gotten some new recorder literature as well as 2 new recorders, the ‘soprinino’ (higher than the ‘soprano’ and smaller in size) and the Garlklein (a really tiny, high pitched recorder). I look forward to the new tunes we will be playing with 5 different sizes of recorders.

January has been an exciting month in Science. With Ms. Becky at the helm, the students in the Middle Years have been taking part in a multitude of hands-on exercises. The Grade 8s have been introduced to the complex but wonderful world of Chemistry. In class, through designed experiments, they have looked at physical and chemical reactions, endothermic vs. exothermic reactions and a variety of other chemical reactions and discoveries. The Grade 7s, delving into Astronomy, looking specifically at planet Earth, assumed the roles of paleontologists. By taking a trip outside, here on the sea side, they went investigating for fossils and organisms that could tell them a story about ancient life on the island. They returned with a vast array of rocks and shells that each had a tale of their own to tell.

In the Language and Literature, both classes have been involved in writing, designing, illustrating and publishing their own books. The Grade 7s are involved in writing children stories, using some of their own favorite childhood tales as models. The Grade 8s have learned the art of letter writing and have put together interactive books of Extraordinary Correspondences between characters they created. Views of these books will be forthcoming.

The Grade 4’s gave an assembly on the topic of “Sportsmanship” along with an awesome song on how to show good sportsmanship.

We also learned about the four spheres of the Earth: the atmosphere, the biosphere, hydrosphere and the lithosphere.  We also researched the layers of the Earth: the crust, mantle and the core. To show how much we learned, we had to make a clay model of the Earth showing all three layers.

The Grade 6 class had a bake sale at the Grand Caymanian. They raised over $100 for their trip to Cuba!

Later in the month, a new student arrived from France. Her name is Molly, and she is in grade 5. She seemed to fit right in, as if she has been here since September.

The grade 5’s and 6’s were given a project to do, about finding the mean, mode, median and range of the heights of one of the Montessori classrooms for Math Class. Also in math we are learning about the area of a circle, complimentary angles, and division with decimals.

This month in Language we began essay writing.

We have made special boat pictures from different shapes and decorated some colourful 3-D aeroplanes.

We even had a special visit from a Police Officer. We loved looking at his smart uniform and he brought his motorbike with him – those of us who were brave enough even had a go at sitting on it!

It is that time of year again for the annual Caykids triathlon.

This event is always a  fun morning for those taking part and watching. There is no registration fee but donations are encouraged and all proceeds will go to the Cayman Islands Cancer Society.

I am hoping to see many children from MBTS take part in this event either in a team or as an individual.  Last year we had about 35 children participating!

I would like to highlight that if your child does commit to taking part in a team it is very important they follow through and show up on the day. I would recommend for parents to exchange phone numbers with their child’s teammates parents just in case something unexpected comes up that morning and you cannot attend.

If your child would like to take part and does not have a team please contact me and I will put them in one.

For those biking a helmet is compulsory and you must bring your own bike.
