Out of This World: Upper Elementary Rocket Day
On November 15th, 2017, the Upper Elementary West class hosted a Rocket Day Assembly for the students of Montessori By The Sea.
In the weeks leading up to the assembly we learned about physics. More specifically, we learned about Sir Isaac Newton and the Laws of Motion. Sir Isaac Newton was the scientist who explained how gravity worked. He was sitting under an apple tree when an apple fell on his head. Sir Isaac Newtown explained the laws of gravity after this.
We also learned about forces. A force can either be a push or pull and can change an object’s shape and direction. A force can also make an object speed up or slow down. Some of the forces we studied were friction, lift and drag, among others.
Finally, we applied what we learned to building our rockets as aerodynamically as we could, and we did test launches to see how much fuel (water!) we needed.
We had a fantastic time learning about forces and building our rockets. We had the best time launching them and we were very excited to share our work with our parents and the entire school.
