Falling into Autumn

October in LED has been a month of giving thanks and doing good! The celebrations of Thanksgiving and Diwali have inspired the children’s discussions about appreciation, gratefulness, and celebrating the joy of life.

To welcome autumn we decided to use the changing colors of the leaves to inspire an art project. The children of LED were invited to find and collect leaves of different shapes, sizes, and colors from the playground to use as part of their collage.  Children were encouraged to use only their imagination and the natural shape and color of the leaves to inspire their work.

As the children began to arrange the leaves on the page, they noticed that interpretations varied across the room. Children were inspired by each other’s viewpoints and created a plethora of animals.  This activity was also linked to botany lessons where children labeled parts of a leaf and were introduced to the exciting topic of photosynthesis.
