A Love for Music

The music department has been a lively place this month. All students have enjoyed a change of instrument as well as exposure to different genres and music styles.

Grades 5 and 6 have moved onto steel pan music. Lessons have centered on the review of basic techniques and general musicianship. We have been playing popular Caribbean tunes that they hear on the radio. They have also been learning basic rock beats on the newest addition to the music department: an electric drum kit.

Since Christmas, Grades 3 and 4 have taken up a new instrument: recorders. They have been hard at work on a project called ‘Recorder Karate.’ This involves earning colored belts to tie onto the end of their recorders as they progress through skills. They have also been engaged in songwriting, an art form we will see showcased at our next school concert.

Grade 1 and 2 have enjoyed a variety of musical themes over the past couple of months. Grade 1 students have been learning the basic techniques of steel pan whilst Grade 2 students have completed their first few ukulele lessons. Both groups have been hard at work and have mastered a few simple songs on both instruments.
