Kindness Missions in Lower El

It was with attitudes of gratitude, spirits of giving, and hearts full of kindness that LED finished off the first term and skated across the Christmas break finish line. Some of the highlights of our December included reading outdoors in the cooler weather, creating ornaments out of small wooden balls onto which we drew intricate details with our beautiful set of acrylic paint pens, making funny Christmas cards, and our Christmas Kindness Journal that was gifted to us by the lovely Ms. Karen (P.E.). We filled this journal with written accounts and illustrations of acts of kindness we performed, some spontaneous and others inspired by our set of Random Acts of Kindness Cards that were handed out to the children as “kindness missions”. Examples of such missions include:

  • Write a poem or make a card for a friend
  • Let someone go ahead of you in line
  • Say a special thank you to a service person
  • Pay someone a compliment
  • Look in the mirror and give yourself a compliment
  • Pick up litter
  • Smile at everyone you see
  • Read a book to someone
  • Teach someone something new

With each spontaneous act and mission accomplished, our little LED elves cultivated a bigger appreciation for the joy of giving – the equally (if not more) important and rewarding counterpoint to receiving during the holiday season.
