The Nature Connection

This month in the Toddler class we’ve had a very busy time learning about animals! As the weeks have progressed, we focused on birds and insects, reptiles, amphibians and mammals. In the classroom, we have been extremely creative in the art area with gluing a fluffy sheep craft, blotting different animal shapes and exploring stickers with animal prints, to name but a few.

We had many interesting lessons with the Toddlers including looking at different types of eggs, holding and exploring textures and colors. We have also had a brilliant time with our long peacock feather which the Toddlers have had the chance to use at Group Time to dismiss their friends for snack. The Toddlers fully explored the natural environment which is great for:

  • Sensorial development: Engages their senses fully with all of the materials we have been using.
  • Curiosity and Exploration: Toddlers are naturally curious about the world around them. Encouraging exploration of natural elements and animals helps satisfy this curiosity, fostering a sense of wonder and a love for learning.
  • Connection to nature: Toddlers are naturally curious about the world around them. Encouraging exploration of natural elements and animals helps satisfy this curiosity, fostering a sense of wonder and a love for learning.

This month our virtue is mindfulness. Mindfulness is cultivated in our classroom every single day! Simple breathing exercises assist in calming our Toddlers and to help them transition to the next part of their day. We keep it fresh and exciting by offering a variety of ways to breathe such as lion breaths, butterfly wings, rainbow arms, etc.   We count along with our breaths while mindfully moving our arms to help our body cool and calm down. Sometimes we even use the ‘breathing ball’ or ‘singing bowl’ as a method to direct our breaths. Another way the Toddlers cultivate mindfulness is by playing the ‘Silence Game’ where we use a sand timer and quietly watch the sand disappear for the duration of one minute.

As parents you can also use these strategies at home. They are super easy, fun and such an enjoyable way to create that inner peace within your children!
