Balancing Fun, Rest, and Safety for Your Child’s Summer Break

As a PE teacher, I’m always encouraging families to keep kids active and engaged during the break, but it is just as important to ensure that any camp or program you choose is safe and well-structured. The Cayman Islands Red Cross flyer below reminds us that there are currently no national standards for youth-serving organizations in the Cayman Islands. This means parents must take extra care when choosing where to send their children. Asking the right questions—such as how staff and volunteers are vetted, what kind of training they receive, and what the adult-to-child ratio is—can make a big difference. These conversations help protect children and ensure they’re in environments that prioritize their well-being and safety, both physically and emotionally.

Equally important is finding the right balance for your child. While high-energy sports or creative learning camps can be exciting and enriching, every child also needs down time. Unscheduled time gives children’s bodies a chance to recover and allows their minds to reset after a busy school year. This kind of rest is just as valuable as physical activity when it comes to overall development. So, when planning your child’s summer, look for programs that not only match their interests and needs but also leave room for free play, ensure that within your own juggle of work and kids you make some special family time, and simple rest. A balanced break prepares children to return to school refreshed, focused, and ready to learn.

As we wrap up the school year, I want to take a moment to celebrate what a fantastic year it’s been in PE. The students have shown incredible growth; not only in their physical skills but in their teamwork, sportsmanship, and enthusiasm for movement. I feel so fortunate to work with such energetic, curious, and willing learners every day. Thank you, parents and families, for your ongoing support. Wishing you all a safe, joyful, and well-deserved summer break!
