Lower Elementary Program

Children who are between the ages of 6 and 9 years old are eligible to attend the Lower Elementary Program at Montessori By The Sea.

Currently, MBTS has 2 Lower Elementary classrooms, with a smaller classroom of approximately 20 children and 2 teachers, and a larger classroom of approximately 30 children and 3 teachers. In accordance with Montessori philosophy, both classrooms are mixed-age environments.

While both classes are currently full for the 2022-2023 school year, and waiting lists are in effect, we welcome and encourage families to book a tour and to contact Kourtni Jackson for admissions information and/or to be added to the Waiting List.

The Lower Elementary Program at MBTS offers creative, curious and active elementary children an environment that meets and feeds their need for inspiration, exploration and independence. Connective thinking, an inherent component of true creativity, happens easily in a Lower Elementary environment that is carefully structured to cultivate it. At any given moment in class, a diverse range of topics is being pursued by the children, and more than one lesson could be taking place. All students do not learn a particular subject at a particular time; instead, individual students or small groups are invited to lessons while the rest of the children go about their own independent learning. Children are encouraged to actively inquire and to apply their creativity, knowledge and academic abilities to answer questions or solve problems, thereby developing the essential skills of lifelong learning.

In the Lower Elementary classroom, we are not only cultivating inquisitive, motivated learners – but also responsible, kind and confident citizens. The Elementary years are a crucial time for the child to build key skills in communication, conflict resolution, compromise, and collaboration, and to learn the value of compassion. The program focuses on community-building and reaching out into the world beyond the classroom. Students take a primary role in modelling values and virtues, in collaboratively forming solutions during disputes, in setting high expectations in the classroom environment, and in finding ways to make a positive impact on their community. At MBTS, we believe that these life skills do not just complement a child’s academic skills or talents; they are integral to a person’s ability to become a successful and happy human being.

In addition to the artistic and creative elements that are seamlessly integrated into the classroom, Elementary children also engage in specialized, weekly classes in Music, Spanish, Visual Arts and Drama, Physical Education and Information and Communications Technology (ICT).

During the summer, an Elementary Summer Camp may be available and is open to all Elementary students who are enrolled at MBTS. Please visit the Summer Camp page in the Spring Term for updated information about the upcoming Summer Camp programs at MBTS.
