Upper Elementary: A Year of Community, Connection, and Celebration

This week, the Upper Elementary class marked the end of a fantastic school year in true Caymanian style, with a joyful and laughter-filled morning at the beach. It was the perfect way to celebrate not just the close of another academic year, but the sense of community we’ve built together over the past months.

From the very first weeks of school, we focused intentionally on forming strong bonds and creating a safe, supportive environment where everyone feels they belong. Through community-building games designed to foster trust and connection, our students began laying the foundation for a year filled with collaboration, kindness, and shared growth.

Our weekly Student Council meetings gave the children the opportunity to take ownership of the smooth running of our classroom. They discussed challenges, proposed solutions, and helped create a positive and inclusive atmosphere. The “Caught Being Virtuous” initiative became a tool in helping students recognise one another’s strengths. Paired with our regular pre-lunch discussions about virtues such as kindness, perseverance, and honesty, it helped nurture a classroom culture where everyone is seen, heard, and uplifted.

Grade 6 students stepped confidently into their role as leaders and mentors, setting a strong example for their younger classmates. Whether offering guidance, modelling responsibility, or simply offering a helping hand, they played a crucial part in strengthening our classroom community.

Our integrated group project (designing a new attraction for the Cayman Islands) was a highlight of the year. It offered students the chance to work in mixed-age teams, pooling their ideas, creativity, and problem-solving skills. These kinds of shared challenges sparked genuine collaboration and friendship across age groups.

We also embraced traditions that helped bring us closer together such as our weekly “Random Day” lunch system, which mixed up seating so students could enjoy meals with different classmates. This simple routine encouraged new connections and helped everyone feel included.

As we wrap up the year, we do so with full hearts. While we’ll be sad to say goodbye to some members of our Upper El family who are moving on, we’re already looking forward to welcoming new students next year. If the year ahead brings even half the joy, connection, and community we’ve experienced this year, we know it will be something truly special.

The graduating Grade 6 students recently took time from their busy final days to share heartfelt words of wisdom with the younger students. In a true display of leadership and community, they offered thoughtful advice to the Lower Elementary students and met separately with the Grade 3s to help guide them as they transition into the Upper Elementary Program. This meaningful act reflects the core values cultivated in a Montessori environment—respect, responsibility, mentorship, and a strong sense of community—demonstrating how deeply these students have embraced the spirit of lifelong learning and compassionate leadership.

We wish these girls the best of luck in their new adventures.

Here’s to a summer of rest and adventure—and to a new school year full of possibility!
